भारत के स्वतंत्र होने पर राजकुमारी अमृतकौर देश की
पहली स्वास्थ्य मंत्री बनी। 1947 से 1957 तक केन्द्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्री के पद पर
सुशोभित रही। उन्होंने इस पद पर रहते हुए आल इंडिया इंस्टीटयूट आफ
मेडिकल साइंसेज की स्थापना में आस्ट्रेलिया, अमरीका, स्वीडन और पश्चिमी
जर्मनी से आर्थिक एवं तकनीकी सहायता प्राप्त की। गांधी जी की प्रेरणा से वे
भारतीय स्वतंत्रता से पूर्व कांग्रेस में शामिल हो गई थी। उन्होंने नमक सत्याग्रह,
भारत छोड़ो आन्दोलन में भाग लिया और वे गिरफ्तार हुई। उन्होंने स्त्रियों की
सामाजिक स्थिति में सुधार के भी महत्वपूर्ण प्रयास किये। वे स्त्रीशिक्षा की समर्थक
थी।
राजसी वातावरण में पालन पोषण होने के उपरान्त भी वे गांधीजी के सीधे
सादे जीवन को पंसद करती थी और उन्होंने अपने जीवन में यही रास्ता अपनाया।
6 फरवरी 1964 को नई दिल्ली में उनका निधन हो गया।
